The Miracle at the MCG: How Virat Kohli Stunned the World

Few encounters in cricket history match the sheer tension and volatility of the 2022 T20 World Cup group stage clash between India and Pakistan. Held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the game produced a legendary comeback anchored by a breathtaking, logic-defying performance from Virat Kohli.

A Near-Impossible Chase

The atmosphere at the MCG was electric, but India’s pursuit of a 160-run target got off to a disastrous start. Collapsing to 31 for 4 early in the innings, statistical models gave India a mere 3.1% chance of victory. The pressure intensified as the overs ticked away, leaving India needing an improbable 28 runs off the final eight deliveries with the dugout watching in silence.

The Turning point

With Pakistan's premier fast bowler Haris Rauf bowling the penultimate over, India desperately needed a miracle. Commentator Jatin Sapru noted that if anyone could pull off the impossible in such a high-stakes scenario, it had to be Kohli.

Reflecting on the moment, Kohli shared that he had tuned out the immense crowd noise and the gravity of the tournament to focus solely on the task at hand: hitting two consecutive sixes. What followed turned into cricketing folklore. Kohli launched two straight sixes off Rauf, including a iconic back-foot lofted straight drive that experts deemed nearly impossible against that length and pace.

A Victory for The Ages

After steering India to a dramatic last-ball win, an emotional Kohli was hoisted onto the shoulders of captain Rohit Sharma during the post-match celebrations. Even Haris Rauf later admitted that an extraordinary knock of that standard could only be pulled off by a batsman of Kohli's supreme quality.

The MCG clash stands as an enduring testament to composure and belief under extreme pressure, proving that no match is lost as long as a master of the game remains at the crease.

Over to you!

Do you consider Kohli’s 82* at the MCG to be the greatest T20 knock of all time, or is there another innings that tops it?
